Facts about the Origin of the Hochwarth Family

By Manfred Hochwarth - Status: March 2000

Origin of the Hochwarths

The name Hochwarth appeared for the first time in the context with the foundation of the village Helmhof, which was about 1712. The Hochwarths were among the foundation families. The first Hochwarth to our knowledge (at least up to now) is Johann, David Simon. He is listed in the family book of Neckarbischofsheim (1594-1810 - page 262). From that source we know that he was born on December 14th 1732 in Helmhof. At this site it is also mentioned that he was married to Anna, Maria, Kunigunde - daughter of Philipp and Maria Umhau - and that he deceased November 1782. We haven't been able to find an entry about his parents and their origin.

The reason that the names of the parents of Johann, David, Simon don not appear in the church registration books is probably in connection with the fact that they were neither born nor married there like the parents of his wife - Phillip and Maria Umhau. From where they in-migrated is unclear. As a fact it is known that families originated from Switzerland already settled there at the time of the foundation of Helmhof. Maybe the origin of the Hochwarths has to be sought for in the Alps. In Bavaria and South-Tyrolia there can be found Hochwarts in Bavaria and in South Tyrol (without the "h" at the end).

With the exception of two instances we have been able to reconstruct all descendent lines starting with Johann, David, Simon up to the present time. We have experienced precious help through the friendly permission of Father Jann - Protestant Parish of Neckarbischofsheim - who allowed us several times to have a look at the valuable church registration books and the Catholic Parish of Obergimpern which made the complete family tree of the "Untergimpern-line" available to us.

Unresolved Hochwarth-Lines

Unsettled is the connection to the main-line of Johann Hochwarth who kept the inn "Zum Hirsch" in Karlsruhe and passed in 1884. His two children were sent for the U.S.A. by a relative after their mother (Anna - maiden name Oehler - deceased 1886 in Karlsruhe) deceased. The son of Johann and Anna - Frederick C. Hochwarth - is the founder of the line "Baltimore U.S.A." According to information from the city archive of Karlsruhe, Johann stemmed from Untergimpern. However, there cannot be found a respective Johann in the family tree from Untergimpern. Presumably, Johann had several first names which are not listed in the available family tree and thus makes it impossible to identify him through this way.

It is also unknown when and from whom the line split off that continues in the village next to Helmhof - Bargen. This is Karl Hochwarth born March 17th 1837 at the Helmhof. His mother was the unmarried Susanna Hochwarth. The parents of Susanna presumably also stemmed from the Helmhof but as of now could not been determined. A son of Karl - whose name was Karl as well (born before 1870!) - migrated to the U.S.A. His whereabouts in the U.S.A. are also unknown. He lived very likely in Canton, Ohio. We started to contact the Protestant Parish in Bargen via letter in March 2000 but as of now have not heard from them.
